Cooling plays a very important role in the performance and longevity of a computer. The cooler the component runs the longer it will function normally. One of the most critical components that needs to be kept cool is the CPU. While every CPU has a maximum temperature, our goal should be to keep the chip as cool as possible, not just below the maximum temperature.

A 10 °C rise in temperature can halve the live of your CPU, an additional 10 °C can halve it again. So for rise of 20 °C 3/4 of the specified life of your CPU is gone. Electromigration is the process in which the ions flowing through the trace, erode the trace eventually causing it to fail.This process happens at a faster rate at higher temperatures and as the traces start to fail, random lockups, glitches, and complete failures can happen. This can happen to any IC not just CPUs.
